ABSTRACT

Background: Children at preschool age are a stage of development where at this stage the child
begins to develop control over body systems such as the ability to go to the toilet, dress and eat on
their own, the child's immune system is not yet running optimally, resulting in the child being at risk
of disease and having to be hospitalized. Hospital treatment can cause anxiety effects in children.
The act of installing an IV or venipuncture is an action that causes anxiety in children because of
the pain it causes, the child reacts aggressively, gets angry, and does not want to cooperate with
nurses and other medical staff. Parental involvement is very important in helping to overcome
children's anxiety while in treatment. Hugging, hugging or also known as parental holding therapy
is a therapy that is believed to be quite effective in providing a sense of comfort to children. The
aim of applying the parental holding technique is to reduce anxiety in children during venipuncture
at Hospital X in Bekasi. Method: case study writing method using parental holding intervention was
carried out on two preschool age children who underwent venipuncture procedures twice. The
children's anxiety was measured using the Children's Fear Scale. The results obtained in both
patients during the venipuncture procedure and after being given parental holding intervention
showed a decrease in the anxiety scale from 4 to 2 during the venipuncture procedure. The
conclusion obtained is that the parental holding technique can be used as a pediatric nursing
intervention to overcome anxiety problems during venipuncture procedures.
