ABSTRACT

Sectio Caesarea is a series of surgical procedures that involve an incision in the lower abdomen
when a normal vaginal delivery is not possible. The caesarean section procedure uses anesthesia,
where the anesthetic drug has an effect that makes intestinal peristalsis slow down. If intestinal
function decreases, this will cause post-operative ileus (POI). In an effort to prevent post-operative
ileus (POI), one of the actions that increases bowel movements is chewing gum. Chewing gum
stimulates the vegal cephalic reflex or stimulates bowel movements through the parasympathetic
nervous system. The application of chewing gum aims to see an increase in bowel function which
will be applied to both patients. The application implemented in this case study involves the number
of patients selected, namely two maternal patients with post caesarean section who were placed in
the inpatient room of hospital x. The instrument used was an observation sheet containing the time
of chewing gum, the time of first flatus and the results of auscultation measurements of bowel sounds.
The results of the case study showed an increase in bowel function such as an increase in bowel
sounds, and the time of first appearance of flatus in both patients after applying chewing gum. After
applying chewing gum to mothers post caesarean section, the results showed that there was an
increase in bowel function such as an increase in bowel sounds and the appearance of flatus in both
patients.
